Keeping Historic Volunteer Data for Previous Volunteers

I have volunteers that I may need to refer to information for historically. If I keep them in my list they show up as volunteers, but just volunteers who are inactive. I would rather have the option to truly have "current volunteers" and their status is active or inactive and also a place to keep history of past volunteers. If I remove them from the opportunity, then I lose their information altogether. If I keep them in the volunteer list then they really show as if they are volunteer but just "inactive" and they count against my numbers.
